incoming traffic passes through an offshore gre tunnel endpoint before reaching our server. by that point, the original public source ip is already absent at the network level. nginx further neutralizes the internal relay address to 0.0.0.0 before passing traffic to synapse. the application layer cannot log what it never receives. message contents are protected by tls and remain opaque even to packet capture.
